The Importance of Accent Marks and Diacritical Marks
Diacritical marks in Spanish may seem insignificant, but they represent an important way to show how words are pronounced as well as their meaning. For example, esta means "this", as in "esta casa" means "this house." Está, rather, is a verb form. For example, "La casa está en Georgia." Esta is pronounced with the emphasis on the "es" or esta; está is pronounced with the emphasis on "tá" or está.
Listen carefully to the audio below:
Esta casa está en la ciudad. This house is in the city.
