The Cold War was the dominant aspect of foreign policy and influenced much of domestic policy as well. Many people were surprised by how quickly communism collapsed in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union once it began to unravel. The United States had emerged victorious in this ideological struggle. The 2000 Election was a close election with an interesting result. Prior to this, many Americans gave little thought to the workings of the electoral college system, but the dispute over Florida's electoral votes brought it to the front and center of the political debate.
