Front view of Jefferson's Monticello

Thomas Jefferson is certainly one of the most recognized of the "Founding Fathers." He left his mark on many areas of U.S. History. He served as our nation's third president, but his impact goes much beyond this historical fact. Jefferson was a scholar, inventor, and statesman. Known for his keen intellect and ability to put ideas down on paper in an eloquent format, he was chosen as the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson contributed greatly in the arenas of political and religious freedom as well. His contributions to education include the founding of the University of Virginia.

Jefferson owned a large 5,000 acre plantation in Virginia, known as Monticello. Jefferson truly loved Monticello and is quoted as saying, "I am as happy no where else and in no other society, and all my wishes end, where I hope my days will end, at Monticello." While Jefferson penned the words "all men are created equal" and came to favor a gradual emancipation of slaves, the fact remained that about 600 slaves lived and worked at Monticello. Their history is part of this important site as well.
