Virtual Visit - Castillo De San Marcos

Panoramic view of Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida.

One of the best and most exciting ways to learn history is to experience it. There are countless historical sites in our nation that offer a first-hand view of history through exhibits and guided tours. While it may not be possible to physically visit every site of historical significance, the internet provides ample opportunities to visit many of these locations virtually. In each module I have selected a historical site that relates to the content of the module for you take a "virtual visit" to.

Christopher Columbus landed in what is today the Bahamas. Much of the early colonization of the New World took place south of what is today the United States. In 1513 Ponce de Leon explored the region around St. Augustine, Florida. In 1565, Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles was sent to establish a permanent colony in the region. This makes St. Augustine the oldest continually inhabited city in the United States. The Spanish built a fortress known as Castillo de San Marcos to defend their colony. St. Augustine is a truly fascinating city to visit packed with centuries of history.
