PAS: Gramática Lesson - Irregular Verbs in the Preterit
Irregular Verbs in the Preterit
Many of the verbs in the preterite that are irregular have the same pattern. They change the stem of the verb into a different stem, and then all of them add the same set of endings. These endings are different to the ones regular preterite verbs share.
Example: tener - to have
The verb tener changes its stem to tuv-, then adds the following irregular preterit endings:
- e
- iste
- o
- imos
- isteis
- ieron
The preterit forms of tener, therefore, are:
- tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron
Notes:
- All of the irregular preterit forms use the endings from above. The only exception is with verbs that end in -j; for the ellos/ellas/ustedes form, you do not include the -i-.
- None of the irregular preterit forms use an accent!
