Irregular Past Participles

Several Spanish verbs form irregular past participles. Review the following carefully so that you can use these forms correctly.

escribir - to write
freír - to fry
hacer - to do
abierto - open(ed)
cubierto - covered
dicho - said
escrito - written
frito - fried
hecho - done
morir - to die
poner - to put
resolver - to resolve
romper - to break
ver - to see
volver - to return
muerto - dead; having died
puesto - put
resuelto - resolved
roto - broken
visto - seen
vuelto - returned

Note:

If an -er or -ir verb stem ends in a vowel, then the past participle is written with an accent over the i. There is an exception, though, for verbs ending in -uir.

Por ejemplo: 

  • leer (to read) → leído (read)
  • oír (to hear) → oído (heard)
  • traer (to bring) → traído (brought)

But:

  • destruir (to destroy) → destruido (destroyed)
