TOC - Turn of the Century Tensions Module Overview

Turn of the Century Tensions.

Introduction

Painting - The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise by Vincent Van GoghAs the European powers moved closer to the 20th century, they came increasingly into conflict with one another. Industrialization led to a need for increased raw materials, creating a European scramble for Asian and African colonies. The balance of power was disrupted as two new states emerged (Italy and Germany), and Russia continued to test its boundaries in attempts to gain the ever desired warm water port. Lifestyles changed with advances in technology and science as well as an increase in disposable income and free time. The Belle Epoch saw Europe flourish as well as showed the strains that would later lead to World War I.
