Causes of the French Revolution

Age of Enlightenment - Appealed to bourgeoisie grievances, challenged the absolute right to rule, liberal society can flourish with free economy. 

Population divided into three estates

France sent troops and supplies to aid the American revolutionaries - introduction to revolutionary ideas 

France was an absolute monarchy with a weak monarch

Financial difficulties - need for tax reform, government had large debts with heavy interest
