  • What were the reasons for the onset of the African slave trade?  How did it start and what were the factors, which promoted its escalation?
  • What were the English East India Company and the Dutch East India Company?  Why were they formed? 
  • When speaking of Spanish exploration the phrase "God, Glory, and Gold," to what is this phrase referencing?
  • What were the motivations for European exploration?  Of all of these motives which was the most significant?
  • What was the religious, political, and economic impact of exploration to the people of Europe?
  • What new technologies promoted exploration?
  • Who was Prince Henry the Navigator and how was he significant to the exploration movement?
  • Which European city served as the banking center of Europe during the 16th century?
  • What was the economic consequence of the influx of gold and silver into Europe from the New World?
  • What was the primary goal and motivation of Philip II of Spain? 
  • What factors led to the Dutch revolt against the Spanish Empire?  What was England's role in this revolt?  Why did England get involved?
  • What were the motivations of each of the nations involved in the 30 Years War?  Be careful to consider not only religious factors but economic and political as well.
  • What was the Edict of Restitution?
  • What were the provisions of the Treaty of Westphalia?  What was the significance of this treaty (long and short term)? What was the St Bartholomew's Massacre and what was its significance in the French Wars of Religion?
