ROS - Speaking Truth to Power Lesson
Speaking Truth to Power
Perhaps no one in the history of the English language was more successful in crafting the spoken word than William Shakespeare. Students and even teachers often forget that Shakespeare's plays were written exclusively for their performance. The bard from Stratford never intended for students in the 21st century to study his texts. His aspiration was entertainment and enlightenment of his Elizabethan English audience. Nonetheless, Shakespeare knew the eternal appeal of well-written poetry and prose. He was also certainly aware of the rhetorical techniques espoused by the Greeks and Romans.
