Key Terms
The four essential genres that you should be familiar with are listed below. Please note they possess both goals and techniques for each.
- Descriptive: Descriptive writing vividly portrays a situation, a character, or a scene, in an attempt to offer the reader a sensory comprehension of the writer's own experience.
- Narrative: Narrative writing tells a story or part of a story.
- Expository: Expository writing seeks to inform, explain, clarify, define, or instruct.
- Persuasive: Persuasive writing intends to convince the reader of a stated opinion or belief.
The art of the argument and persuasive writing is the final genre examined in the module. The following Greek works were used by Aristotle to define the specific appeal of an argument.
