Concise Writing

Writing concise sentences eliminates vague diction from writing. This will increase the accuracy of the descriptions as well as elevate the interest of the audience.

Take a look at the following presentation about concise writing. The advice given is excellent and many examples are provided. Be sure to take notes.

 

 

Examples 

The sentences in Column A in the table below are poorly constructed. The sentences in Column B are the improved, concise version.

Column A - Poorly Constructed	Column B - Concise
Every single individual in our class bought tickets to the concert.	Everyone in our class bought tickets to the concert.
At the edge of the river, we boarded a small boat that was floating there on the surface of the water.	At the edge of the river, we boarded a small boat.
Winner of the sportsmanship award, Atul was asked to give a speech at the sports banquet.	Atul, who was the winner of the sportsmanship award, was asked to give a speech at the sports banquet.
Tori, who is a computer expert, produced a program that detects computer viruses.	Tori, a computer expert, produced a program that detects computer viruses.
The price that was confirmed will be honored by the dealer.	The confirmed price will be honored by the dealer.
The fact is that I am turning seventeen in five months.	I am turning seventeen in five months.
