Particle Practice

Particles are key elements of Japanese grammar.  Fill in the correct particles and complete the practice activity below in order check your answers. Email the instructor if you have any questions.

Review the following particles and their functions:

  • Lesson 32:
    • が: indicating the subject of a sentence; used with question words and their answers (with どっち、こっち、そっち、あっち + adjective)
      • Example:
        • Q: どっちいいですか。
        • A: こっちいいです。
      • Translation:
        • Q: Which one do you prefer?
        • A: I prefer this one.
    • に: indicating the result of deciding or choosing (with する)
      • Example: ピザしましょう。
      • Translation: Let's have pizza!
  • Lesson 33:
    • に: indicating the place/area where something or someone exists
    • : indicating the subject of a sentence (with ある or いる)
      • Example: このちかく本やありますか。
      • Translation: Is there a bookstore nearby?
  • Lesson 33-34
    • から: indicating a given place from which something is described
      • Example: 学校はうちからとおいです。
      • Translation: The school is far from my house.
    • の: indicating a description or modification of the noun that follows it by the noun that precedes it
      • Example: ひだりから2ばん目ケーキを3つください。
      • Translation: Please give me three of the cakes that are second from the left.
  • Lesson 35
    • を: indicating the direct object of a sentence
      • Note: this particle is written with を but is pronounced o
      • Example: しゃしんみせてください。
      • Translation: Please show me your picture.
    • から: indicating the source of an action (with もらう)
      • Example: ちちからくるまもらいました。
      • Translation: I got a car from my father.
    • に: indicating the time or occasion when an action or process occurs (with まえ)
      • Example: 3年まえに日本に行きました。
      • Translation: I went to Japan three years ago.
  • Lesson 36
    • が: indicating what is needed (with いる)
      • Example: スプーンが4ほんいります。
      • Translation: I need four spoons.
    • が: indicating what is experienced (with ある)
      • Example: スキーをしたことがありますか。
      • Translation: Have you ever skied?
