Particle Practice

Particles are key elements of Japanese grammar.  Fill in the correct particles and complete the practice activity below in order check your answers. Email the instructor if you have any questions.

Review the following particles and their functions:

  • で: indicating boundaries of time (with ato ) (L. 24)
    • Example: また、あときます。
      • Translation: I will come back here again later.
  • の: indicating a description or modification of the noun that follows it by the noun that precedes it (L. 25, L. 27)
    • Example: 来しゅうテニスしあいがあります。(来しゅう = らいしゅう)
      • Translation: I will have a tennis match next week.
  • に: indicating the time or occasion when an action or process occurs (L. 25)
    • Example: 来年の8月りょこうをしまう。(来年 = らいねん)
      • Translation: I will travel (somewhere) next August.
  • に: indicating the place or purpose of going, the direction of movement (L. 28, L. 29)
    • Example: どこあそびいきたいですか。
      • Translation: Where do you want to go (to have fun)?
  • に: indicating where something or someone exists (L. 31)
    • Review は: indicating the topic of the sentence (L. 31)
      • Note: this particle is written with は but is pronounced wa
    • Example: デパートどこありますか。
    • Translation: Where is the department store?
  • が: indicating the subject of a sentence; used with question words and their answers (L. 27)
    • Example:
    • Q: だれかちましたか。
    • A: 山田さんかちました。
      • Translation:
      • Q: Who won?
      • A: Mr. Yamada won.
