Particle Practice
Particles are key elements of Japanese grammar. Fill in the correct particles and complete the practice activity below in order check your answers. Email the instructor if you have any questions.
Review the following particles and their functions:
- に: indicating the place/area where something or someone exists (L. 16)
- Example:本はつくえのうえにあります。
- Translation: The book is on the desk.
- Example:本はつくえのうえにあります。
- に: indicating the person one meets (with あう) (L. 18)
- Example: 日本語のせんせいにあいます。
- Translation: I will meet with my Japanese teacher.
- Example: 日本語のせんせいにあいます。
- に: indicating the indirect object (an addressee) of a sentence whom something is directed towards (L. 20)
- Example: ともだちに手がみをかきました。
- Translation: I wrote a letter to my friend.
- Example: ともだちに手がみをかきました。
- に: used to indicate "going to + place"
- Example: 学校に行きます。
- I go to school.
- Example: 学校に行きます。
- へ: indicating the place of going, the direction of movement (L. 21)
- Note: as a particle, へ is pronounced e
- Example: あした東京へいきます。
- Translation: I will go to Tokyo tomorrow.
- へ: indicating the person who is addressed at the beginning of a letter; meaning "To ~" (L. 21)
- Example: かずこさんへ
- Translation: To Kazuko,
- Example: かずこさんへ
- を: indicating the direct object of a sentence (L. 19)
- Reminder: as a particle, を is pronounced o
- Example: 私はしゅうまつえをかきます。
- Translation: I paint/draw pictures on weekends.
