LDM: Listening and Reading Comprehension

Listening and Reading Comprehension

Throughout this module on les défis mondiaux you have completed a number of listening and reading assignments. In the language teaching community, listening and reading skills are called receptive language skills because language learners receive the language - they do not have to produce the language. In fact, over 60% of what you do in a language is listening. Listening comprehension could be considered the most important skill you have to master in a foreign language. Making yourself understood in a language is important, but maybe a more important question: can you understand what others are communicating to you? In contrast to receptive language skills, language learners also learn productive or active language skills which demand that learners produce the language. Of course all of these skills are integral in mastering a language in all its facets.

On the AP French Language and Culture Exam you will be assessed on your receptive language skills in Section 1. Remember that Section 1 is worth 50% of your total score. Section 1 is comprised of a listening comprehension section, a reading comprehension section, and a section that assesses French language learners' ability to answer questions about a listening comprehension piece and a reading passage on the same topic.

Assessments

Throughout the course, you will be assessed on your listening and reading comprehension skills. These assessments will factor into your overall progress in the course, and the material in these two assessments reflect topics discussed in each module.
