Grammar Activity - Negative Forms of Adjectives

Do you remember there were two kinds of adjectives in Japanese? They are i-adjectives and na-adjectives. When they are in negative forms, they have distinctly different endings.

The negative of na -adjectives

Drop -na at the end and add ja nai as in:

  • kantan-na
    • drop -na + ja nai
      • kantan-na - na = kantan
      • kantan + ja nai => kantan ja nai
    • kantan ja nai
      • Hiragana: かんたんじゃない
  • kirei-na => kirei ja nai
    • Hiragana: きれいじゃない
  • shizuka-na => shizuka ja nai
    • Hiragana: しずかじゃない

Let's compare this with the negative of i -adjectives.

The negative of i -adjectives

Drop i at the end and add kunai as in:

  • omoshiroi
    • -i + kunai
      • omoshiroi - i => omoshiro
      • omoshiro + kunai => omoshirokunai
    • omoshirokunai
      • Hiragana: おもしろくない
  • hayai => hayakunai
    • Hiragana: はやくない
  • ookii => ookikunai
    • Hiragana: おおきくない)
