Culture Note - Ganbaru

In this lesson, you learned a derivative Ganbatte, which is a form of ganbaru (plain).

Ganbaru (頑張る, lit. stand firm) - is a common Japanese term which basically means to work hard.

  • In general, ganbaru is translated as doing one's best, but in reality, it is often used to emphasize that someone is putting in more effort than usual - going above and beyond - to complete a task. If someone is ganbaru, they are really working through something difficult and are dealing with adversity to do so.
  • Ganbaru also indicates that someone is bringing a difficult task to its conclusion. Other translations include persistence, tenacity, and hard work.
  • Japanese culture embraces the notion of ganbaru.
