School Subjects

"What is your favorite school subject?" may not be your conversation topic with your American friends, but it can be a quite interesting topic with your Japanese friends. It may fascinate you to learn that, to your Japanese friends, Japan is always the center of the world map, or that they really like solving complicated quadratic equations in math class. Whether you talk about differences and similarities, or likes and dislikes, learning about school subjects in Japanese will help you further your conversation skills.

Essential Questions:

  • Can you name school subjects in Japanese?
  • How do you say and write what day of the week your classes are scheduled?
  • How do you say and write what time of the day your classes are scheduled?
  • How do you explain your opinions and preferences about different topics such as school subjects, sports, music, and food?
  • How and when do you use katakana?
  • Can you read and write in katakana アイウエオ and アーイーウーエーオー?

Goals

By the end of this module, for listening and speaking skills, you will be able to name and talk about school subjects and class schedules, and describe your opinions and preferences about different topics such as school subjects, sports, music, and food. For reading and writing skills, you will learn to read and write katakana アイウエオ ,   long vowels ア ー イ ー ウ ー エ ー オ ー , カキクケコ and ガギグゲゴ , and also show comprehension of  written materials containing hiragana, and selected katakana and kanji. For cultural understanding, you will learn about school subjects and schedules in Japan.
