Shopping, Part 3: Practice [Reading Katakana: y]

Let's take some time to practice what we've learned in this lesson.

The directions for the activities below are written with the idea of you working with a partner. If you do not have a partner available, complete the practice on your own, completing both parts of the activity as well as you can.

Kuruma-wa ikura desu-ka?

With your partner practice asking and answering questions about the price of various items. All prices are in dollars and are between $1 and $9,999. Include cents in at least half of your prices. At the same time (and without looking at each other’s page) you and your partner both write a reasonable price for each item in your own column. Use your imagination if you do not know the approximate price. Take turns asking for and recording the price of each item on your partner’s list. Compare your work when you have finished. Speak in Japanese only.

Example: Partner B: Kuruma-wa ikura desu-ka?
Partner A: Sen go-hyaku kyuu-juu-kyuu-doru desu. [B writes $1599.00]

Practice reading the following katakana with your partner. Look only at your side of the page. When the roomaji is given on your side, listen carefully to your partner. If your partner reads the katakana correctly, respond with Hai, soo desu. If there is an error, respond with Chotto chigaimasu. Katakana-o moo ichi-do yonde kudasai.

Form guruupu of 3 人 (san-nin). Player A writes one 4-digit price in yen under A and does not show it to the other players. Player B (on A’s left) goes first and guesses what the price is. Player A responds by telling Player B and C whether the actual price is higher or lower than B’s guess. Then Player C guesses. Player A again responds by telling both players whether their next guess needs to be a higher or lower price. Continue taking turns until B or C guesses correctly, thus earning 1 point. Then Player B writes down a price, C guesses first, and the game continues. Continue until you run out of time. The person with the most points wins.
