Visual Messages

The web pages you create will include image maps, logos, images relating to the content, and shapes (such as buttons) to direct navigation. When images are used appropriately, they enhance the message on the web page. If the images are not relevant or not the right format for web pages, they can detract from the message resulting in confusion and frustration from your audience. Image Types

The images you create can be saved in different formats. The image format will determine how the image is compressed. The figure below showcases the format types used by web designers. Take note of the compression details and format descriptions.

 

File Format Compression Description
Graphics Interchange Format
(.gif)
Lossless Supports animation. Best for drawn graphics or logos. Uses data compression for large file. Limited to 256 colors. Avoid using this format if you have complex images and photos.
Joint Photographic Experts Group
(.jpeg)
Lossy The compression methods and file format used for photographs.   Avoid using this format with line art.
Portable Network Graphics
(.png)
Lossless Best format for drawn graphics or logos. This format offers the best balance between quality and file size. Does not support animations.   Uses data compression for large files. Avoid using this format with line art.
