Subject Pronouns

The Verb "Ser" - "To Be"

"Ser" is one of the most important verbs in Spanish. We use "ser" to talk about many things, including descriptions of ourselves, others, and their origin. In this lesson, you will learn about the singular forms (referring to one person) of "ser."  Take notes as you will see this again on your grammar quiz. You will also learn a song to help you remember.

The forms of "ser" are as follows:

Negation

Negation is used to make sentences negative. This is easy to do in Spanish. Simply put "no" in front of the verb in the sentence.  Take notes of the examples below.

Examples:

  • She is not short - Ella no es baja.
  • I am not smart - Yo no soy inteligente.

Adjectives and agreement

Now you will get the chance to use the verb "ser" in a sentence. "Ser" is used to describe physical appearance, tell nationality, origin, profession, time, and date. All of these things you have learned in this module so now you get the chance to tie it all in together!

Here are some important things to learn about adjectives:

  • In Spanish, adjectives come AFTER the noun (ex: el lago azúl, la montaña grande)
  • Adjectives must agree in NUMBER and GENDER with the noun the modify (or describe)
  • You already learned about NUMBER (singular vs. pluarl) and
  • You already learned about GENDER (feminine vs. masculine)
  • All adjectives have number and gender and can be changed to match the noun.
    • Example:
      • Alto = singular/masculine
      • Alta = singular/feminine
      • Altos = plural/masculine
      • Altas = plural/feminine
