DD1: Overview

Days and Dates, Part 1

Otanjoobi omedetoo! is the phrase you hear if someone has a birthday in Japan. Being able to tell one's birthday seems to be an important skill whether you need it to fill in forms or to answer the simple question "when is your birthday?" in a friendly conversation. In this module, you will be introduced to the terms and Kanji writing for months and days so you can say and write birthdays of yours and others.  You will also learn why Japanese people like to ask about your blood type. Let's find out what that is all about.

Essential Questions:

  • How do you ask when someone's birthday is?
  • How do you ask how old someone will become?
  • What is the origin of Kanji?
  • How is Kanji used in Japanese writing system?
  • What are some of Japanese holidays?
  • Why do Japanese ask about your blood type?
