FAM: Grammar Point - Ko-so-a-do Words

Grammar Point - Ko-so-a-do Words

Japanese uses a set of forms that start ko-so-a-do. These can either be pronouns (when followed with -re: kore, sore, are, dore) or adjectives (kono, sono, ano, dono). Be sure to compare the differences in meaning when you use -re series and -no series:

Chart 1: ko-so-a-do words: -re series. Kore - this thing. Sore - that thing. Are - that thing over there. Dore - which thing?
Chart 2: ko-so-a-do words: -no series. Kono+Noun - This+Noun. Sono+Noun - That+Noun. Ano+Noun - That (thing over there)+Noun. Dono+Noun - Which+Noun?
Notice that ko-so-a-do words in chart 1 are used like nouns whereas ko-so-a-do words in chart 2 are used like adjectives and they have to be followed by a noun.
