Double Vowels - Hiragana Spelling
Since all hiragana with the exception of あいうえお and ん , represent a consonant-vowel combination, it is more difficult to see the double vowel. Here are the basic rules for writing Romanized double vowels in hiragana (notice oo):
Double Vowels in Hiragana |
||
---|---|---|
aa |
write the second a as: あ |
okaasan (mother) ~ おかあさん |
ii |
write the second i as: い |
kiite (listen/ask) ~ きいて |
uu |
write the second u as: う |
suuji (numeral) ~ すうじ |
ei (used in Roomaji in place of ee) |
write the i as: い |
eigo (English) ~ えいご |
oo |
write the second o as: う |
otoosan (father) ~ おとうさん |
Remember that lengthening/doubling the vowel will change the meaning of the word:
- おじさん (ojisan) = uncle
- おじいさん (ojiisan) = grandfather
