Do You Understand?: Writing Hiragana (k-/g-) and Practice

Let's practice Japanese from this lesson.

Hiragana Stroke Order: k- and g-

The following cards contain a gif demonstrating the correct stroke order for the hiragana symbols based on k- and g- (か、き、く、け、こ、が、ぎ、ぐ、げ、ご). Remember that g- uses the same symbols as k- but with the dakuten. If you need to watch the order more than once, reload the page. Practice writing these new hiragana using correct stroke order!

Hai or Iie?

Below are facts are about three different people: Tanaka, Suzuki and Watanabe. Answer the questions with yes or no based on the information provided. After completing the embedded activity, also practice answering verbally, but include more information. For example, when you say an answer out loud, repeat the main information (for example: Yes, his name is Tanaka).

Who Am I?

This activity works best with a partner. Even if you don't have a partner, spend some time working through the exercise, reading the information out loud and practicing how you would answer.

You are one of the Japanese students shown in the chart below. Your school’s location, student level, and grade level are also given, but they are not in the same row as your name. You construct your own secret identity. For example, you might choose to be Kojima, an ichi-nen-sei in a kookoo located in Tookyoo. Mark the appropriate information on your own chart, but do not tell your partner your identity. Your partner must ask hai-iie questions (remember the yes-no questions we practiced?) to uncover your secret identity. When you answer a question, respond truthfully (based on the identity you have selected) with one of the following answers.

Iie, (whatever your partner just asked about) ja nai desu.
Hai, (whatever your partner just asked about) desu.Y
