The Dative Case - In Practice

Pronouns in nominative, accusative, and dative cases

Remember...

  • nominative case = subjects
  • accusative case = direct objects
  • dative case = indirect objects

Take note of one exception: when plural nouns are used in the dative case, the noun itself will add an "N" to the end of the noun.

For example:

  • Die Mutter gibt den Kindern ein Eis.
    • The mother is giving the children ice cream.

The dative case also affects simple pronouns; the visual organizer depicts these important changes, and, as with the articles, all pronoun forms change in the dative case from their base or nominative forms.

Note: In the image, N = nominative; A = accusative; D = dative
