A Kaufhäuser is a German department store.

As we have discussed before there are no American style shopping malls in Germany. However, there are several department stores comparable to Macy's, Nordstroms, etc. Karstadt, Hertie, Kaufhof and Ka De We are some of the best known German department stores, but they differ slightly from stores in America.

• If you are at a department store and you buy a men's shirt you need to pay for it in the men's section. If you walk away to a different section without paying for it, store personnel might think you are shoplifting!
• You will often find not only a food court, but you will also be able to buy food items at a department store (these are often located in the basement of the store).
