In this module we will examine the German Art und Weise (manner or way of doing things) of Einkaufen (shopping - note, the word is both a noun/gerund and a separable verb). Where and when German speakers may shop reveals much about European culture in general, so let's look more closely now at Einkaufen in Deutschland und Europa. 

What students will know: 

  • Vocabulary related to shopping and clothing
  • Cultural information about shopping in Germany and how it compares to shopping in the US
  • Descriptive adjectives             
  • The dative case
  • Dative prepositions: aus, außer, bei, mit nach, seit, von, zu
  • Introduction to Dative Verbs: gefallen, helfen, danken, gehören, schmecken, passen, helfen, gratulieren, antworten

Essential Questions:

  • What is shopping like in a German-speaking country?
  • What are the shopping hours/days in Germany and how do they differ from the United States?
  • Where do people in Germany buy their clothes and household items?
