Kultur - die Autobahn
Germany's Autobahn system is an extensive network of limited-access freeways that can usually provide a driver with a fast route from city to city.
People generally think of the Autobahn (German highway) as sort of a race track, where people can drive as fast as they want, but that is not accurate. People do drive a lot faster, and there is a recommended speed limit of 130 km/h (81 mph). However, specific speed limits are posted around cities, when there is inclement weather and in areas of heavy traffic.
The Autobahn is very well-designed and carefully maintained. State-of-the-art electronic monitoring systems have been implemented to monitor weather conditions and traffic density. These systems can dynamically alter the speed limit to warn drivers ahead of time.
There is an ongoing debate in Germany over the advantages and disadvantages of having a set speed limit in the Autobahn. Check out this very interesting article on the German Autobahn Links to an external site. or read the embedded version below.
