Using the question word Wohin? and nach

Wohin* = where to, to where, used for example with fahren (to go)

• Wohin fährt Manuela am Wochenende? Sie fährt nach Frankreich.
• Wohin fährt Michael am Wochenende? Er fährt in die Scheiwz.

*Sometimes wohin gets split in two. There is no difference in meaning.

• Wo fährt Michael am Wochenende hin?

You can't use wo without hin to ask about motion or direction in German. You must always use the correct form of where for location (wo?) or motion/direction (wohin?).

Prepositions Expressing Direction: nach und in die

Nach is used with countries that are neuter (das)

In die is used with countries that are feminine or plural.

• Wohin fährst du? Ich fahre nach Kanada/nach Mexico/nach Deutschland ...
• Wohin fahren Sie? Ich fahre in die USA, in die Türkei, in die Schweiz ...
