Indefinite Articles - Negative Article kein(e)

Like in English, there is no plural indefinite article in German. You cannot say a shoes (incorrect German: eine Schuhe).

• Da ist ein Auto.
  • There is a car.
  • Note: 1 car = a car (with article)
• Da sind (zwei) Autos.
  • There are (two) cars.
  • Note: 2 cars or more = cars (no article)

Negative Article - kein(e)

German, however, also has a negative indefinite article kein(e) "not a, not an, no"

• Ist das ein Hund? Nein, das ist kein Hund. Das ist eine Katze.
  • Is that a dog? No, that is not a dog (that is no dog). That is a cat.
• Ist das eine Katze? Nein, das ist keine Katze. Das ist ein Hund.
  • Is that a cat? No, that is not a cat (that is no cat). That is a dog.

In German the negative kein(e) does have a plural form:

• Sind das Vögel? Nein, das sind keine Vögel. Das sind Frösche.
  • Are those birds? No, those are not birds (those are no birds). Those are frogs.
