Conjugating the verb sein (to be) - present tense
The verb sein or "to be" is the first irregular verb you will learn in German. Irregular verbs are called irregular because they do not follow any specific pattern. Let's look at the verb sein in German and the verb "to be" in English. Notice that unlike the regular verb spielen (to play) that we previously studied, the stem or root of the verb changes completely as you conjugate it.
