Asking about someone else's likes and dislikes
There are a few simple "formulas" to help you, when you want to ask someone whether they like to do something.
Informational question
These are general question, using a question word.
- Question word + verb + subject pronoun + gerne + ?
- Example: Was (question word) + spielst (verb) + du (subject pronoun) + gerne?
- Was spielst du gerne?
- What do you like to play?
It begins with a question word such as...
- Wie - How?
- Was - What?
- Wann - When?
- Was für (ein) - What kind of (a) ...
We have already learned a few informational questions:
- Wie heißt du?
- What is your name?
- Wie alt bist du?
- How old are you?
Remember those?
Here are some additional examples of informational questions we are learning in this module. Listen to these questions and attempt to pronounce them yourself:
- Was machst du gern?
- What do you like to do?
- Was für Musik hörst du gern?
- What kind of Muisk do you like to hear?
Yes or No Questions
These are questions that can be answered yes or no such as "Do you like to swim?" or "Do you like to play golf?" Listen to the example and attempt to pronounce it:
- Verb + subject pronoun + gerne + (particular sport you play/specific style of music).
- Example 1: Spielst (Verb) + du (subject pronoun) + gerne + Golf?
- Spielst du gerne Golf?
- Do you like to play golf?
- Example 2: Schwimmst du gerne?
- Do you like to swim?
Tag questions
These are questions tagged on to the end of a statement as in "Don't you?", "Aren't you?", etc.
In standard German you simply add a comma and nicht? or nicht wahr? to the end of an affirmative sentence.
Listen to the example and attempt to pronounce it:
- Example: Du spielst Golf, nicht wahr?
- You play Golf, don't you?
