Vocabulary - Likes and Dislikes

In this lesson, we'll be focusing on sports and games and music. Here are some common expressions and vocabulary related to leisure activities. Listen to the phrases a few times. Practice pronouncing the phrases yourself as well.

  • Was machst du gern?
    • What do you like to do?
  • Was für Musik hörst du gern?
    • What kind of music do you like to hear?

German word order verb before objectVocabulary Terms:

  • reiten = to ride
  • schwimmen = to swim
  • Fußball spielen = to play soccer
  • Tennis spielen = to play Tennis
  • Golf spielen = to play Golf
  • Fahrrad fahren = to ride a bike (also Radfahren )
  • Volleyball spielen = to play Volleyball
  • Rollerblade gehen = to go rollerblading
  • Guitarre spielen = to play the guitar
  • Klavier spielen = to play the piano
  • Schach spielen = to play chess
  • Dame spielen = to play checkers
  • Computerspiele spielen = to play computer games
  • Videospiele spielen = to play video games
  • Aerobic Machen = to do aerobics
  • Gewichte heben = to lift weights
  • ins Kino gehen = to go to the movies
  • mit Freunden treffen = to meet with friends
  • joggen = to jog

Before the verb hören we could also use any of these other music genres. Germans are very familiar with American music culture, so if it can be said in English, you can use the same term in German followed by hören.
