The Ligature œ
In French I, the word sister was introduced as sœur. At the time, it was mentioned that the word could be spelled both with or without the combined oe (called a ligature), so that both spellings, sœur and soeur could both be correct. We have a new word now that has the same possible ligature:
- œuvre/oeuvre
Like sœur, you will most often see this word spelled with the ligature, though it will also be found without. Please just be aware the the correct spelling uses the ligature (œuvre), but that either spelling will be considered correct. This will be generally true for additional French vocabulary that includes the oe ligature (another example is bœuf, for instance).
