Expressing need - avoir besoin de

Explication - There are a number of ways to express need in French. One of the more common ones is the avoir expression of avoir besoin de. Since this is an avoir expression, you need to conjugate the verb avoir correctly.

There are two ways to express need:

  1. to need something and
  2. to need to do something

J'ai besoin d'acheter un nouvel ordinateur. I need to buy a new computer.  
Ils ont besoin du sel de l'autre table. They need the salt from the other table.  
Ils ont besoin de mettre du sel. They need to add salt.  
J'ai besoin d'un billet de cinéma. I need a movie ticket.  
J'ai besoin d'aller au cinéma. I need to go to the movies.

**Don't forget contractions with de

de + la = de la       As-tu besoin de la clé? (Do you need the key?)

de + le = du           Nous avons besoin du vélo. (We need the bike.)

de + les = des        Vous avez besoin des cartes. (Y'all need the cards.)
