CPR - Contemporary Prose Choices Lesson

Contemporary Prose Choices Lesson

You will read one novel or play for this module. The text choice is yours, but your selection must come from the provided list.
Deciding what you want to read is a good skill to develop, and it will become especially important when you are not in school and are able to choose what to read all the time.

Linked below you will find a chart that will guide you to make a decision: Contemporary Prose Choice Chart.
It is recommended that you print this chart and record your thoughts as you watch the overview video and explore the texts online.

For the first step in the decision-making process, please view the following video presentation, which will give you an overview of each text choice. There are 25 in all. As you review the information, take notes in the first column of the chart. This is your decision, so be honest in your notes. Please be patient while the presentation loads; depending on your internet connection, it may take some time. Ensure that your speakers are turned up, and use the controls at the bottom of the video to pause or back up whenever you need.

Now that you have completed the first column of your chart, you have likely been able to cross some selections of your list. Two more steps will help you make the perfect choice for you!

  1. The best way to know if you will enjoy a book is by reading an excerpt from it. You can do this by visiting your school or local library, or you can look online, as publishers now provide short excerpts from books online to help readers decide whether or not they want to purchase the text. Just search for "excerpt from [insert the name of the book or play]."
  2. Consider the availability of the book or play before making your final choice. Almost all of these can be checked out at any library and should be available in every book store, but it never hurts to check before you make your final choice.

You will work on the outside reading assignment for this module while completing the other units in the course. Once you have made your selection, you will need to find a copy of the text and begin reading as soon as possible. Do not procrastinate on this assignment!

Important!  Looking Ahead

You will have several assessments related to the book you choose. Look ahead in the module to review the assignment instructions so that you are working on them as you read your selected text.
