ENA - Rationalism and Rhetoric Lesson
Rationalism and Rhetoric Lesson
The American Revolution was a time of turmoil and uncertainty, but many leaders and heroes rose to the challenge of these times and charted a course for what became the United States of America and established the foundation for the identity and ideals we live by today.
Many of the thinkers, writers, and speakers of this era were influenced by Enlightenment ideas. For a better understanding of the Enlightenment, please view two videos linked below: "American Enlightenment" and the Crash Course World History Video, "The American Revolution and the Enlightenment." You may also find it entertaining and helpful to play the "Road to Revolution" "The American Revolution and the Enlightenment." Game also linked below, especially if you need to refresh your knowledge of the American Revolutionary War period.

Now that you have been transported back to Revolutionary America, there is one additional set of tools you will need to help you understand the impact of the writings you will encounter in this unit. Please view the following presentation, which will give you an overview of Rhetoric: the use of language to communicate effectively, usually to persuade. As you review the information, please take notes, as you will use this information for several assignments during this unit. Please be patient while the presentation loads - depending on your internet connection, it may take some time. Ensure that your speakers are turned up, and use the controls at the bottom of the presentation to advance the slides.
