Regional Pride
Towards the end of the 19th Century, the Modernism movement began. With this movement, magical realism appeared in Latin American works and influenced art and literature around the world. Magical Realism is a genre where magic elements are a natural part in an otherwise mundane, realistic environment.
Elements of Magical Realist in literature include:
- Fantastic elements
- Characters who accept the magical elements instead of rejecting them
- Imagery
- Symbolism
- Cause and Effect
- Legend or Folklore
- Distortion of Time
- Shifts in Viewpoint
- Open-ended Conclusion
Many Latin American novels and poetry revealed social issues and elements of the revolution. The influence of Latin American literature across the world solidified the regional pride the people earned with independence.
