Digital Storytelling Lesson
Introduction
Digital storytelling involves telling a story by combining digital images with text, recorded audio narration, video clips, and/or music. This project will allow you to combine the art of telling a story with images and photos while also enhancing it with the use of graphics, audio, and/or video.
Digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view. The topics used in digital storytelling range from personal tales to the recounting of historical events, from exploring life in one's own community to the search for life in other corners of the universe, and literally, everything in between.
Your story should last 3-5 minutes. The photos or images may be your own, or copied from internet sources. If you are copying from external sources, be sure to cite the source by providing the web address. While the order of some photos (e.g. the lead photo and the clincher) is set, the order of most types of photos in your essay is your preference.
Review
A journalist's job is to report the news using words and phrases. A photojournalist's job is to report the news, but to capture it on film. Both capture the truth. Both focus on the who, the what, the when, the where, they why, and the how.
So what makes a photographer different than a photojournalist? A photographer who isn't a photojournalist typically produces an image for a particular purpose. This could be to show off the latest fashion trend or even to sell a product. A photojournalist focuses on capturing the image of a story and reporting it to the public.
Look at these examples and compare the difference. In the first image, the photographer appears to be right in the action. It also appears more polished; the lighting and focus on the image is more clear and pleasing to the eye.
While the second image also looks to have been taken during a pivotal move by the participant in the match, it appears to be grainier in appearance. The background of the image distracts from the action; however, the background of the mountains in the first image only further highlights the athletes.
