screamOne of the best ways to grab and hold the attention of a reader is by using verbs that wouldn't be considered generic. A strong verb helps the reader to visualize what you are writing about. This is especially important in sports writing since you have to help the reader visualize what is happening.

Look at these examples. Which one in each pair is more powerful?

  • Replied or Uttered
  • Shouted or Declared
  • Hiked or Marched
  • Moved or Tottered
  • Saw or Gazed
  • Viewed or Regarded
  • Felt or Judged
  • Reasoned or Contemplated

 

The type of verb you select can enrich your writing. The right verb can create a more complete, distinctive mental picture for the reader. Look at these examples. Which sentences are more interesting?

The pitcher threw another strike ball.

The pitcher flung another strike ball at the plate, which resulted in a win for the Braves.

Kelly Slater scored a round of perfect tens in the last round of competition.

Kelly Slater surpassed the other competitors as he secured a round of perfect tens in the last round of competition.
