Writing a Feature Story Lesson

Introduction

Unlike new stories, features are long lasting. This means that they can usually be published anytime. Features appeal to emotions. It is important to remember there are different approaches you can take to a feature story:

Explanatory: How smoking leads to diseases
Issues and trends: The ride of smoking among women in urban areas
Investigative: How cigarette companies use innovative marketing to target teens
Narrative: The story of the first person to successfully sue a cigarette company for causing them to develop cancer.

Feature stories also have specific characteristics that make them unique:

Characteristics of a feature story:
Primary purpose is to entertain.
More emphasis on human interest.
Use of vivid words to create images and stimulate the 5 senses. They are descriptive and full of detail.
More freedom in form and structure. Feature stories rarely have a news summary lead. They have a strong narrative line.
Can usually be written in any style that is appropriate to content and purpose of story. They can be organized in a variety of ways.
Does not have to pass the cut-off test. The article is rounded out by linking up the conclusion with the beginning; It reads like a good essay.
