Prewriting: The Brainstorm
After you have determined the topic and thesis of your research paper and have instructor approval, begin the brainstorm process. Brainstorming prior to researching and beginning a rough draft gives writers organized ideas and a sense of cohesiveness. Similarly, the brainstorm allows the writer to gauge possible areas of research.

As you have learned, you have several options for creating an outline. We have learned about two common types of brainstorming techniques: the web and the outline. The brainstorm gives writers an opportunity to craft topic sentences and supporting details that they will back up with evidence through research. Creating a brainstorm provides a visual of essay organization because writers can see if all topic sentences and supporting details relate to each other and relate back to the thesis to create cohesion. Since the thesis serves as the main idea, then you will now develop the main idea through the body paragraphs; the brainstorm serves as a visual way to create the necessary organization.
