ASL - The Epic Lesson

The Epic

An epic is a long, narrative poem usually centered around a hero; narrative poems tell stories. Therefore, Anglo-Saxon epics, also called heroic poetry, are the stories of Anglo-Saxon heroes. The language of epics is typically elevated, and Anglo-Saxon epics still incorporate the various literary devices and themes that appear across most Anglo-Saxon literature.

An epic typically has ten characteristics:

I0 Common
Characteristics of THE EPIC
Begins "in medias res" (in the middle of the action where flashbacks fill in the missing information)

Vast setting that occurs in many
nations or around the world/universe

Begins with an "Invocation to a muse"
(calling on the gods to help tell the
story)

Features long, formal speeches
Begins with a statement of the theme

Shows divine intervention in human
affairs

Includes the use of epithets (descriptive phrase expressing a quality of the object-ex: "wine-dark sea" or"rosy-fingered dawn")

Features heroes that embody values and morals

Contains long lists called an epic
catalogue (long, detailed list of people or places)

Often shows the tragic hero descending into the underworld or hell

There are a few surviving Anglo-Saxon epics that tell the tales of Anglo-Saxon heroes. Beowulf is the only complete epic; the other Anglo-Saxon epics only have fragments that exist. However, many translations and versions of Beowulf appear on the Internet. After reading Beowulf, you will complete the Anglo-Saxon Persuasive Writing Assignment.

Beowulf

Beowulf reveals the journey of an Anglo-Saxon hero as he travels to hunt the monster Grendel, who continues to threaten a kingdom. Beowulf must slay the monster in order to end the slaughtering of men that continues to occur as the monster and the monster's mother attempt to destroy the community.

Having a clear knowledge base of various characters in the epic aids in understanding.
