Clean Water

Women in Nepal drawing water from a wellWater may well be the most critical resource in the twenty-first century. Already at least 1.1 billion people lack an adequate supply of safe drinking water and more than twice that many don't have modern sanitation. Polluted water and lack of sanitation are estimated to contribute to the ill health of more than 1.2 billion people annually, including the death of 15 million children per year. About 40 percent of the world's population lives in countries where water demands now exceed supplies. By 2025, the UN projects that as many as three-fourths of us could live under similar conditions. Water wars may well become the major sources of international conflict in the coming decades.
