LMT - Two-Way Tables Lesson
Two-Way Tables
In this lesson, we will discuss and interpret two-way tables.
A two-way table organizes data about two categorical variables. The data is organized into rows and columns.
Let's take a look...
Ex. 1:
Fifty students were asked whether or not they like to listen to rock 'n roll music or country music.
The results to the poll are as follows:
- 12 students like rock 'n roll music and country music
- 20 students like rock 'n roll music but not country music
- 10 students like country music but not rock 'n roll music
- 8 students do not like rock 'n roll music or country music
The table below shows this information in a two-way table.
To read the two-way table, you see where the columns and rows share a cell of the table. That value then represents the number of people, in this case, who fall into the two categories of that specific row and column.
Ex. 2:
Now let's see if you can answer a question or two about data displayed in a two-way table.
Which correlation does the two=way table suggest?
a. The rechargeable batteries tend to be AA.
b. The rechargeable batteries tend to be AAA.
c. There is not a correlation between battery size and type of battery.
d. The disposable batteries tend to be AA.
