Most likely you already have some experience with graphing calculators, but if not, there are many resources to assist you in learning the basics. Beginning with the next module, you will be expected to have one of the AP approved calculators with specified capabilities available for use. Although there are many approved models, free tutorials and support for the TI-83Plus/84Plus are abundant and widely available. Free connectivity software and low cost connectivity cables for the TI-83Plus/84Plus series are available for capturing screen shots of your calculator window.

Graphmatica (Windows)

Graphmatica imageGraphmatica is an interactive algebraic equation grapher that can be used as an aide to plotting a variety of mathematical curves. You can choose between several types of graphing: Cartesian functions, relations, and inequalities; parametric; polar; and slope-field and initial-value approximations for ordinary differential equations. Graphmatica remembers up to the last 999 equations you entered in the command line or loaded from a file. An overview of features and installation instructions are found at the Graphmatica website. A fully enabled evaluation version is available for a free 30-day trial, after which a minimal cost is charged. After you have downloaded Graphmatica, spend some time exploring its many capabilities and features. Note that the Help menu includes a Search option that provides invaluable assistance in learning the specialized notation required for entering parametric and polar equations. You are certain to enjoy being able to graph an ellipse or other non-function without having to split it into two separate functions, as required by graphing calculators.

Grapher (MAC)

Grapher is a built-in tool on a MAC computer that can be used to plot mathematical curves. To locate it, go to Applications, Utilities, and then Grapher.

Other Graphing Utilities

It is not necessary for you to purchase Graphmatica after the free trial expires. The internet has many options for a graphing calculator, many of which have the same calculus capabilities as your handheld graphing calculator and they are free of charge. Some options are the IMathAS Graphing Calculator and Desmos graphing calculator, which you can locate through an internet search. Be sure to have a handheld graphing calculator for regular use throughout the course, as you will need it when you take the AP Calculus Exam.
