INT - Tools of the Internet (Lesson)
Tools of the Internet
What are Internet Tools?
What are internet tools? These are applications that help us create, innovate, process, and exchange information with others, creating our new society, a global society. Information is exchanged or created from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
The exchange could be the use of the internet tool of word processing to create a document to turn in for school or sharing with others for their reactions to your analysis. You could take a French class and then discuss or talk to a person in French in France because of the internet. Another example could be processing data with a spreadsheet to provide detailed trend analysis. Or an internet tool could be browser innovations that help you search better, identify good and bad sites. A tool could be an application that helps you keep track of your calendar, create an alarm clock, or etc.
Internet tools are applications (apps) and software that help us, the end user, be more productive, have fun while learning, or even provide music you like to hear. Here we will look at a couple of internet options and continue looking at different ideas throughout the course. Let's start with some of the tools that are social, that bring the world together as a community. These tools let you talk and discuss all over the world and have had significant impact on the world around us.
The process of sending mail, in this case email through the internet to another person. The word email is short for webmail because the note that you type is sent with an address over the internet to the person you addressed it to. Mail servers (large computers) all over the world are responsible for the handling and delivery of email, virtual post offices.
Think about the internet and the computer. What people are at an advantage with these innovations and which people are at a disadvantage? Have some people become isolated and have a harder time communicating? Answer these and other questions below in your word processing document on another page from your earlier items. We will use this later, so save your work.
Consider the following statements and their associated questions. The answers that are provided for the questions are not the only answers, but may help with direction of analyzing change and impact based on the technology innovation.
Think about the internet and the computer.
Did you notice as you answered the questions and looked at the possible answers that the technology we use does have impact on more entities than just us? Yes, the technology sure makes things easier to do, faster, allows for creativity (email cards), and other features. However the technology does put others at a disadvantage, and create a loss of jobs when the industry moves in a different direction. For example, with more online books and online sellers of books, bookstores are not as prevalent as they once were.
As you progress through this course, continue to consider as we learn various ways to create artifacts using technology what was and what is now and where the future could be. You are the creative force of the future with the technologies at hand. You are growing up with them. Be cognizant of changes that take place in society and ethical issues that could abound if technology is used incorrectly. How also is the technology of the tools of the internet affecting local, state, national, and world economies.
Social Media
Available on the internet are many social media sites including FaceBook, Google +, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Twitter, and many others. With these technologies and growth of the internet connections around the world with friends, family, and others whom we have never met and may never meet are created. We instant message people, and chat. Some of the social media sites are for specific topics, like jobs (Linkedin) and others. Are all sites used by all people or is there a social community division with the different sites?
Other Tools
Lastly internet tools are the tools that allow you to create graphs, infographics, documents, spreadsheets, and other items that are free to use. You must follow the manufacturer rules for use and should include in your resources the actual tool used to create the product. Graphs of various types display data to the further provide detail and information about the topic of the graph, creating the need for data analysis. We will look at data analysis later in the course.
