Internet History and Words

History of the Internet

The internet started way before most people realize. There were people in the 1950's working to make one computer access and talk to another computer. The thought process was to create a network of computers. A network would be able to route around one computer that was down at the time.

Take a moment to watch the video below to learn more about the History of the Internet.

World Wide Web Video

In the following video, learn about the World Wide Web from Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited with developing the world-wide web and making it available to everyone with access to technology.  The managing and running of websites is handled by web servers.

Internet Timeline

Use the following internet timeline to view some of the details of its evolution. Note that men and women were instrumental in the development. Yes, in the 21st century the internet has been made available globally to the public, provided internet access is available. This global expansion to the public has fueled even more development including the social items Facebook, Twitter, etc.

An internet worm causes trouble on the internet.   Worms have been around a while causing problems. We will investigate some worms on the internet with cybersecurity later in the course.  For the time being, understand that a worm harms computer functions and is created for various reasons to cause havoc with computers on the internet.

Think back on what you have learned in this Internet timeline. Where would we be without these tools? Your parents grew up without them. Take a moment and reflect on how the world has changed, what you take for granted. What do your grandparents or other older people think of the changes? They lived through all the changes, and not just the computer and the internet. Go ask them.  It is good to have their perspective, as this will provide you a real view of society and ethical Concerns.  What change has happened in the economy?  Are these changes all for the good of all?

Remember computers are everywhere, even a microwave has one and most parents and grandparents did not grow up with a microwave. Add your reflection to your word processing document on separate page.

As you continue through this course, continually reflect on what was, is, and may be in the future. Maybe you will be the one with the next great innovation!
